Waterbury Youth Services (WYS), the authorized Youth Service Bureau in the Greater Waterbury area, helps youth learn the skills they need to be more successful at home, in school and throughout the community. As a community-based agency, WYS responds to the needs of children, youth and their families, through a variety of programs which enhance their quality of life. WYS provides programming in the areas of: mentoring, after school programming, youth employment and leadership, truancy and juvenile justice prevention and intervention, services to homeless youth, residential services, community outreach and summer camp. The mission of WYS is: Guiding youth to discover their unique talents and potential for success- one life at a time.
Give Local funds will be used to provide After School services for youth Monday - Thursday from 3:00 - 5:00. Staff monitor student's grades and attendance and require certain levels of academic performance in order for youth to participate in the activities component of the program. Youth ages 13-18 participate in homework help and tutoring and their choice of several program activities, including Woodworking, Entrepreneurial Program where they learn business skills, Journalism, and Senior Preparation, where they learn how to research colleges, complete financial aid and scholarship forms, write college essays and applications and also how to prepare emotionally and socially for the transition from high school to college. Students in the Senior Prep program also visit several schools throughout the year to experience college campus life. 100% of our seniors have been accepted into four year colleges.
