Roxbury Congregational Church
of Matching Remaining
The Roxbury Congregational Church has a long tradition of outreach and service to its members and the wider community. From July 7-14, that outreach will include a mission trip to South Dakota.
All Give Local funds will be used directly for our Service Trip to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation. A group of Roxbury volunteers will travel to the town of LaPlant, South Dakota, and working for a week along with the staff of Simply Smiles, a CT-based non-profit, providing a daily summer camp experience, daily enrichment programs for the town’s children and youth and prepare (3) town-wide dinners for all ages. Dewey County, SD, has the second highest mortality rate in the nation, and an unemployment rate of 88%. This area also has an increased incidence of hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. Hopelessness is rampant among the children and youth who see no path out of the cycle of poverty. We seek to instill hope, encourage self sufficiency and create a brighter future for the Native Americans there.
