Reach Out and Read, the vaccination for illiteracy. Reach Out and Read gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. With unparalleled access to families with young children, Reach Out and Read medical providers educate parents about the importance of reading aloud and give children a new book to take home to build their home library. We focus on children five and under growing up in low-income families to foster parental engagement and early brain development. We are the only early-literacy program that uses medical providers to deliver our model, with 15 published research studies showing that families served by our program read together more often and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. We have the support of the American Academy of Pediatrics as the best-practice model for literacy development by medical providers.
With your help, we will use Give Local funds to specifically support the eight clinical locations offering Reach Out and Read in Greater Waterbury. The dedicated medical providers at these clinics serve over 6,500 children and families every year, giving out more than 12,000 new books while fostering parental engagement, family bonding, early-literacy skills and early brain development. One of our medical providers recently shared, “We are glad to have the opportunity to participate in the Reach out and Read program. A lot of our children come from low-income families and do not have the means to provide early childhood literacy. We love to see the smiley faces of the children when they get a brand new book at their well child check visit. This also serves as a bond between parent and child, and a positive connection with medical providers.” Please join us in eradicating illiteracy. Thank you.
