A doctor. A family. A book. The Rx for Success. Reach Out and Read gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. We strive to improve children’s early literacy skills and social-emotional health during the span of rapid brain growth between birth and age five, particularly in economically disadvantaged families who are at risk for adverse outcomes. To do this, we partner with pediatricians who provide knowledge and tools to parents about the need to nurture early learning, including a new book for the child. Our program is the subject of 15 research studies, the largest body of research for any psychosocial intervention in pediatrics, showing that participating children are read to more often, have better language skills, and are better prepared for school. We have the support of the American Academy of Pediatrics as the best practice model for literacy development by medical providers.
Your generous donation will support eight Reach Out and Read medical locations in Greater Waterbury. The providers at these clinics, serve 7,300 children every year, giving out more than 13,700 new books while fostering parental engagement, early literacy skills and early brain development. One of our providers recently shared, “Michelle has been my patient since she was born. She came in for her 6-year-old checkup, and her mom was proudly holding Michelle’s kindergarten report card. Michelle is one of the strongest students in her class and the teacher recommended she skip first grade! Her mom said it was all because of Reach Out and Read.” Thanks to our programs, children like Michelle achieve positive results every day. But there is another child in a doctor’s office, like Michelle, waiting for her book, and for her story to begin. Can she count on you?
