Naugatuck Valley Project, Inc.

NVP, established in 1983, is a community organization of 20 faith-based congregations, housing cooperatives and labor union locals in the Naugatuck Valley region of Connecticut. NVP’s mission is to unite and train diverse low and moderate income leaders to take action to affect positive change in their communities and beyond. Our region extends north to Torrington, south to Derby/Ansonia. NVP has won important community organizing and economic development campaigns over the years. Pension funds restored, medical interpretive services improved, a community land trust developed 104 units of desperately needed quality affordable housing. In 2017, a large Peace and Unity Gathering provided Muslim adults and children a safe place to publicly bear “witness” to their stories of increased threats and bigotry; it allowed many others to provide public support to the Muslim community. This led to the creation of a City of Waterbury Taskforce to address threats to Muslim adults and children.
Give Local funds will provide support to NVP’s leadership training program, a year-long opportunity for low and moderate income people to develop the knowledge, skill and experience needed to participate as a community leader in the public arena. This includes: • Eight 4-hour local training sessions (2 every 3 months). These are introductory training sessions, designed to increase new leaders’ self-confidence about participating in the public arena. NVP staff serve as trainers; outside trainers are procured as well; • One all-day leadership training session in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a nationally renown trainer. This year, the training, “Story of Self, Us, and Now”, will be in April. Marshall Ganz from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government will be doing the training; • One 3-day Organizing Institute training in July at a retreat center. Developing leaders participate in interactive workshops, along with leaders from community organizations throughout New England.
