Naugatuck Valley Project is a regional organization of 18 religious congregations, housing cooperatives, and labor union locals. Its mission is to build relationships among diverse groups around their shared values and help them organize to gain a voice to put these values into action. NVP’s organizing region includes Waterbury, Naugatuck, Beacon Falls, Watertown, Thomaston, Ansonia, Derby, and Seymour. NVP provides formal and informal leadership development training for scores of low- and moderate-income people as they engage in community organizing and economic development campaigns. These have included creating Naugatuck Valley Housing Development Corporation, a community land trust which has built or rehabbed 107 units of permanently affordable housing, including Brookside Cooperative Housing, and winning improved medical interpretation services at Valley hospitals. Its most recent Peace and Unity campaign has led to the creation of a City of Waterbury Taskforce to address threats to Muslim adults and children.
Give Local funds will provide support NVP’s ongoing community organizing campaigns, including: • Aging with Dignity/Working with Dignity, which is organizing to win: 1) improvements in the jobs of home healthcare workers to reduce a 50% annual turnover rate among them and thereby improve the quality of home healthcare services; and 2) help seniors organize to win the expansion of services that provide support to allow many more of them to age at home instead of in nursing homes. • Peace and Unity Campaign, which is overseeing the work of the City of Waterbury Taskforce to address threats to the Muslim community. • Hospital Community Benefits Campaign, which is exploring ways that Valley hospitals and community institutions can reduce hospital re-admissions for vulnerable populations.
