Brass City Harvest is a 501(c)(3) Community Development Corporation whose mission is to enhance the health, lifestyle, urban environment and workforce development in Waterbury through a sustainable community food system that includes core programs of urban farming, farmers' markets, and healthy cooking and nutrition classes. The organization is currently designing a regional food hub that will be located at East Liberty and Mill Streets in Waterbury which will provide agricultural services to the state's farmers, create up to 24 new jobs and careers, and enhance fresh food access throughout the community. The food hub will foster a transformation of the South End Neighborhood by eliminating a blighted piece of land and it will also create new public green space along the Mad River.
Give Local funds will be utilized for the 2018 growing season to purchase plants and gardening supplies. Most importantly, Give Local funds will assist us in investing in local youth by allowing us to hire them to staff our urban farm and greenhouses for the summer and for Saturday work once school begins in the fall. All food grown is for the benefit of the community and is distributed to emergency food providers such as the soup kitchens and various food pantries, as well as the elderly at the various senior centers in Waterbury.
